The riddle is entertaining, but I agree that it is the illustration sshel provides the fun and engaging humor. I remember having to memorize one of these poems in the third grade and recite it in front of the class.

This visual works to achieve its purpose because it is simple, unrealistic and open for interpretation. Without the visuals, this story would be scary for a child to read.

In this illustration our writer cannot be seen on the page, but we see the snake stretching across the page with one leg in his mouth. These used to be some of my favorite things to read when I was young.
