It’s the most fun I’ve had reading in a good long while. Kitty is the duckling ready to assume her swan plumage, and does she ever in this escape from Cranky Manor where her guardian has kept her in the severest of conditions.

The reason is Freddy’s aversion to pronouns. Then there is Reverend Hugh Rattray, who assures Kitty that he is very fond of her, and that she will make a very suitable wife when her youthful levity has been tempered, for he pities the fact she is a destitute orphan, to her scorn. Honestly, I wanted to step into the book and tell Kitty to go shopping with Freddy, by all means, to have him offer advice on hairstyles and accessories and drawing room furniture for sure – but really, to marry him?
