Feb 01, Jirka Sikyta rated it really liked it. But, definitely not Jeeves. It was a miracle that there was no obvious sign of anyone having laid a finger on him. Before reading The Shadow of the Wind, this was my favourite book. You can comfort the bereaved family with the dictum that what may cut short a young life, always ends an old one.
Could you say a little bit about the plot and some of the mad characters in it?

Without revealing too much about the action, I think I can say that while the narrator attempts to court the lovely and modern Barbara, money-grubbing relatives also staying at the cottage cause and are subject to a certain amount of mayhem. The book is a delight simply as is–for the narrator’s character and his descriptions of life around him, and for the abounding outrageousness and absurdity of the situations–but in rereading it something like ten years later, I found that my research on interwar Czech culture had provided me with a new appreciation of the characters and their views and behavior.

So given the fact that the name, even if it’s written in the same way, will not be understood by a native English speaker in the same way, it seemed to be better to go the whole hog, and change it completely, if necessary. Such a surprising observation will earn you the heart-felt thanks of the bereaved and will substantially lighten the burden of their grief; all the more so in view of the zaturnin that you will not be alone, but rather many other people will say these things to them.

I am undecided about whether I like the innumerable digressions – into the decline of craftsmanship or the holy war saturrnin novelists etc. Jriotka more sharp-witted would be the remark that wherever they’ve gone, we’ll all be following sooner or later. The hat was sitting on his head in a rather uncertain way that one tends to associate with a generous consumption of beer.

It hasn’t aged badly given it was written in It tells the humorous and picaresque story of an idle young gentleman and his manservant, the Saturnin of the title, and not surprisingly parallels have often been drawn with P.
The thing was that I could observe a trail of footprints in the freshly fallen snow, winding from one door to the next, like a chain binding the whole street.
So I suppose it’s a bit like someone like Joseph Heller, that this is the one book that he’s become known for. For example, we see Barbara as a young, attractive, athletic, and competent woman. There are saturnjn surprising number of belly-laughs for a novel that is more than half a century old. Saturnin is the Jeeves of Czech literature, with his own sardonic slavic twist.
